ఓరుగల్లు రాజధానిగా క్రీ.శ 1083 నుండి క్రీ.శ.1323వరకు కాకతీయ సామ్రాజ్యాన్ని ప్రతాపరువూదుడు పరిపాలించాడు. ఆ సమయంలోనే మేడారం ప్రాంతాన్ని పగిడిద్దరాజు పరిపాలిస్తున్నాడు. ఆయన భార్య సమ్మక్క. వారికి సారలమ్మ, నాగులమ్మ అనే కుమ్తాలు, జంపన్న అనే కుమారుడు ఉన్నాడు. ఆ రోజుల్లోనే కాకతీయ సామ్రాజ్యంలో తీవ్రమైన కరువు ఏర్పడిందట. కప్పం కట్టవలసిందిగా ప్రతాపరువూదుడు పగిడిద్దరాజును ఆజ్ఞాపించాడు.

అయితే దానికి పగిడిద్దరాజు నిరాకరించడంతో ఆయన మీదా యుద్ధం ప్రకటించాడు ప్రతాపరువూదుడు. అది గమనించిన పగిదిద్దరాజు కుమార్తె నాగులమ్మ, అల్లుడు గోవిందరాజు, కుమారుడు జంపన్నలతో కలసి కాకతీయ సైన్యంపై తిరుగుబాటు చేస్తారు. సంపెంగ వాగు వద్ద జరిగిన యుద్ధంలో వీరోచితంగా పోరాడిన జంపన్న వీరమరణం పొందుతాడు. దీంతో ఆయన రక్తంతో వాగు ఎర్రబారుతుంది. అలా ఎర్రబారిన వాగును నేడు జంపన్న వాగుగా పిలుస్తారు. కాకతీయుల వంటి రాజులను ఎదిరించి సమ్మక్క, సారక్క, పగిడిద్దరాజలతో పాటు వారి కుటుంబమంతా వీరమరణం పొందింది. అలా మరణించిన గిరిజన వీరులను నేడు గిరిజనులు దేవతలుగా పూజిస్తున్నారు. అలా ప్రతి రెండు సంవత్సరాలకు ఒకసారి మేడారం సమ్మక్క సారలమ్మ జాతరను జరుపుకుంటున్నాం.


ఆసియాలోనే అతిపెద్ద జాతర మేడారం సమ్మక్క సారలమ్మ జాతర. రెండు సంవత్సరాలకొకసారి జరుపుకునే ఈ గిరిజన జాతర ఏర్పాట్లలో అక్రమార్కులు అపుడే పావులు కదుపుతున్నారు. రాజకీయ నేతలు అందినకాడికి దోచుకునేందుకు వ్యూహాలు రచిస్తున్నారు. వచ్చే ఏడాది ఫిబ్రవరి 12 నుంచి 15 వరకు మేడారం మహాజాతర నిర్వహణకు ప్రభుత్వం నిర్ణయం తీసుకుంది. ఈ జాతరకు మన రాష్ట్రం
